Wow, you have never actually used linux have you?
I admin linux on nearly 100 servers, all of various hardware and they all run solid. I have servers with uptime counted in years.

Some of your points were valid 5 years ago, but now some of the most powerful tools for video, as well as many other areas are designed for linux, with ports to other platforms being a secondary option.

I can't remember the last kernel panic or core dump I saw, although I would guess it was in 1997 or so.

firewire support in linux is solid, as are many hardware drivers. In fact, linux supports more hardware out of the box than any other platform available today.

I assume he was joking when he sent this list? (although I agree with some of the comments :-) )

Yeah, the usual dumb Linux bashing sh*t.

I'm home from playing True Combat Elite on a Linux box.

It also has a directory /var/log where i can find any information about what's going on.

And it's up for 3 months now (personal box, experimenting with kernels)

Wow. What a load of crock.

1) Action Cube to just name one.
2) Cinelerra
3) DO NOT blame Linux for this. MS doesn't write the drivers for their OS, blame the hardware makers.

about the core dumps i have not had a problem one out of my computer with Linux installed. The only time that I have problems is when I'm messing around with something. Windows would crash from turning it on.

1. No decent games: Wrong
2. No professional Video editors on Linux: Biggest companies like Dreamworks and Pixar use Linux for… guess what? Video editing!
3. Cannot use multi-function(printer/fax/scanner) office machines: Are you living in the 90's??
4. No decent firewire support: If you know how firewire worked you'd know your "friend" is wrong.
5. Character and voice recognition software are primitive: Can't say much on that honestly, coz I don't know!
6. Kernel panics are everywhere, core dumps are very common: Wrong again! Like "yeah_right" said, its 2007, so may be your friend should wake up and smell the coffee!
7. Linux makes you paranoid (look at any linux advocate’s rants): Well.. depends upon who you ask, but everyone will agree, less than how crazy Vista can make you!
8. Installing linux is unfriendly, and doesn’t recognize all the hardware, or cannot support them: Sorry dude wrong again! If you haven't heard of LiveDistro's google it, installation is easier than making a cup of tea! And hardware support? "yeah_right" has already commented on it!
9. When it crashes, good luck finding an answer: When I google, all I find is answers! There are literally millions of people waiting to provide help!!! Good luck getting help from Microsoft from the 100 or so employees for Vista or even XP!
10. No DVD Authoring software/hardware: I honestly can't comment on this, coz I don't know!

My objective with this comment is not to bash you or your friend, I just want you to know that Linux isn't as bad as you think. Actually its a lot better than most people think. and if you don't catch up as well, you're gonna be left behind buddy… coz the future of computing is Linux. I'm not saying Linux is gonna take 50% of the market share in the 5 years, (it could), but you will be needing to know Linux, sooner than you expect!

"2. No professional Video editors on Linux."

I think your friend better tell the people who made The Matrix, Titanic, Gladiator, Superman Returns, What Dreams May Come, Cats and Dogs, Shrek, The Perfect Storm, Prince of Egypt,
The Road to El Dorado, Antz, Chicken Run, Deep Blue Sea, Star Trek: Insurrection, Fantasia 2000, Men in Black, Hollow Man, that they weren't using Linux. I think they would want to know.
