to Clint7 - by default this policy is not configured, so you have to click "Enabled" first, in order to change the setting. Maximum is 1440, which equals 24 hours. Then click "ok" and it applies after your next restart.

I get to where it says reprompt for restart and have to stop because I do not have that option that I can see. I have Windows Pro

For the guy with Windows XP Home (or guy being unfairly denied access to gpedit.msc in corporate env)…

1. Copy the text below into Notepad. Save it with a .reg extension. Open and confirm that you want to copy the data into your registry.

Another way to do it is to just type the following from a command (DOS) prompt:

net stop wuauserv

This will stop the service that is tracking that a reboot is needed. The service will stay stopped until a.) you reboot the machine, b.) you restart the service by typing "start" instead of "stop" in the command line mentioned above, or c.) your domain admin's global policy forces it to restart.

Of course, item "c" is only valid on machines that are in a domain in which a domain administrator has set a global policy. It is possible that there is a "d" to that list that wakes up the service after 24 hours. However, there is a way to stop even that so that you can ignore it indefinetly, but it isn't wise to do it and I'm not going to go into that here. Simply put, not restarting for more than 24 hours after applying a critical patch is, in most cases, taking unnecessary risks and just silly. So what Shalmanese said about it not being possible to set it for more than 24 hours could be ammended to say "nor should it let you go longer than that."

I usually just grab the window and pull it into the lower right corner of the screen. It stops reappearing that way.

Take a look in the "Explain" tab, the disabled setting does NOT disable the restart prompt, instead, it sets it back to the default 10 minutes. There is *NO* way to turn off the restart prompt. The longest you can set it to is 24 hours.

Or move it to the far bottom right of your screen until there's just a nubbin showing and leave it there. If you don't respond to the prompt it will sit there indefinitely. Should work for Home as well.

I tried to carry out this procedure but got
sidetracked as there is no setting. I have
only three settings:
1. Remove access to use all windows update features
2. Do not display Install Updates and Shut down option in shut down windows dialog box
3. Do not adjust default option to install updates and shut down in shut down windows dialog box

That's it. Can you help?
