In Windows XP, an event is any significant occurrence in the system or in a program that requires users to be notified, or an entry added to a log. The Event Log Service records application, security, and system events in Event Viewer.
With the event logs in Event Viewer, you can obtain information about your hardware, software, and system components, and monitor security events on a local or remote computer. Event logs can also help you discover when your computer was used.
How to start the Event Viewer:
- Click the Start button
- Select "Run"
- Type eventvwr in the "open" field
- Click ok
You can also:
- Click Start, and then click Control Panel
- Click Performance and Maintenance
- Click Administrative Tools
- Double-click Computer Management
Windows opens up the event viewer

Now click the system log in the left part of the screen. On the right side you will see a list of generated system events, organized in several columns.

Every time Windows starts some events are added to the log. Looking the date and time the events occurred you can discover when your computer has been used.
